Hide Mafia Posts From Non-Mafia Friends

*** EDIT ***
Further testing shows that this does not work. Best thing to do is to let your friends know they can hide mafia wars posts themselves by mousing over a post and clicking hide. See the earlier post mentioned below.

*** Original Post Below ***
In an earlier post I mentioned how you can tell your non-mafia friends to hide all of the mafia wars posts that flood their walls. Now the last post was a great tip and I still use it to hide games and applications (lollipop) that I don’t want to see, but what if you could stop flooding your friends without teaching them how to do anything? — You can!

I recently came across a setting that YOU can do to keep your job and gift request posts from taking over the wall space of your non-mafia friends.

First you will need to create a friend list and put all of your mafia into it. See my witness protection post for more info on that.

Next you will need to mouse over settings on the upper right hand side and click on applications.

Find Mafia Wars on the list and click Edit Settings.

Click the pull down menu for privacy and select customize.
In the next window select some friends.
In the textbox type the name of your friends list that contains all of your mafia friends.
Change the pull down menu under networks to ‘none of my networks.’
Click Ok, then Ok again.

Now mafia people will be able to see all your job requests and people not in your mafia wont. If people not in your mafia browse to your profile they will still see your mafia wars posts but these won’t show on their wall when they are trying to learn where their best friend ate lunch today.

  1. Alternatively you could put all of your non-mafia friends into a group and set the custom settings to everyone except the non-mafia group. However if you have different groups for different games its probably best to only publish to the game group.

  2. Is there a way to get friends added with e-maillists (mass added) directly added to the mw list? Otherwise this won’t increase security much since they will have access to your profile (e-mail and such) until you log on and add them (all hundreds of them) to it manualy. It will still make you less exposed over time but people looking for personal info will get a chance to get it when they accept your invitation and it is probably just then they would look for it.

  3. Just one question . . . If you have actual friends in your mafia and they are added to more that one list, which set of preferences will be in affect on that particular friend?

  4. Vicki, from the testing I’ve done if you block something from a list and you add a friend to that list, they won’t see the blocked info even if they are on another list that doesn’t block that info. If you have two lists that each block something different and add them to both lists they will be blocked from both items.

  5. Thanks for the reply, and great info!

  6. I tried this and it doesn’t seem to work. it still publishes to my friends stream even though my friend is not in my mafia wars list that I created

  7. I am new to facebook and this info was helpful….except I could not find a network pull down. Where is it located please :>)

  8. I appreciate the info, especially when you start really growing your mafia. thanks again

  9. Thanks so much for the advice. Need as much as I can get. Still have so much to learn. But thank You. Very much appreciated.!!!!!!!!

  10. This did NOT help for me either.

Anybody know how to fix this issue??? I feel horrible for bothering friends with Mafia Wars notifications.

  11. Actually these settings do work… for what they’re intended to do. Which unfortunately isn’t hiding posts to the newsfeed. The privacy setting only applies to your profile choice. If you have a MW box on your profile somewhere, it will hide that from your non-MW friends. Not too helpful.

I sure wish FB would come up with a fix for this, without putting the burden on the non-players.

  12. I too feel bad that my high friends convinced me to join FB at our 30th reunion and never in a million years did I think that I would get hooked on a game. Now they are burdened with my Mafia Wars posts. Had I known, I would have had two FB accounts if that is possible. One for games and one for friends and family. It would certainly be easier if FB would allow to send MW help request only to mafia family and Farm Ville to farmer friends, etc. Come on FB get with the program!
